May 13, 2024
In a thrilling display of athleticism and determination, two new World Masters Records were sealed yesterday at the Dublin Graded Meet 2 held at Santry Morton Stadium. The records fell in the fiercely competitive 4x800m Relay events, showcasing the talent and spirit of these incredible athletes.
The first record-breaking performance came from the W45 team, comprising Denise Toner from Clones AC, Maria Dunne from St Laurence O'Tooles, Zoe Quinn from Raheny, and Kelly Neely representing City of Lisburn. Their remarkable time of 9:40.76 not only secured victory but also eclipsed the previous record of 9:43.13, set by an Australian team in March 2023. The quartet's effort and relentless pace propelled them to this historic achievement, leaving a lasting mark on the world of Masters athletics.
Not to be outdone, the W65 team delivered an extraordinary performance, rewriting the record books with a time of 12:59.94. The team comprised of Mary Browne from Mayo AC (formerly Lucan Harriers), Noreen Bonner from Finn Valley, Brigid McCabe from Mullingar Harriers, and Pauline Moran, also from Mayo AC. Their stunning display of speed and endurance obliterated the previous record of 14:49.29, which had been set by a USA team in July 2022. This achievement not only highlights the individual talents of these athletes but also underscores the power of teamwork in breaking barriers.
Acknowledgments and gratitude are extended to Dermot Nagle and the diligent team of officials at Dublin Athletics for their support and seamless organisation, which enabled these record attempts to take place under optimal conditions. Their efforts behind the scenes were instrumental in creating an environment conducive to world-class performances and pushing the boundaries of Masters athletics.
The Dublin Graded Meet 2 will be remembered as a momentous occasion, where seasoned athletes defied the record books, pushed their limits, and etched their names in the annals of sporting history. These record-breaking achievements serve as inspiration for aspiring athletes and a testament to the timeless pursuit of excellence in the world of track and field.
