Triumph and Tenacity: The 5th Edition of the Kinsale 10-Mile Road Race
February 27, 2024
On Sunday, February 25th, 2024, the stunning Kinsale saw the 5th edition of the Kinsale 10-Mile Road Race, a challenging event that attracted 927 dedicated athletes from across Ireland. Hosted by the local powerhouse celebrating 60 years this year, Riverstick Kinsale AC, in collaboration with Kinsale Community School, this race has become a staple in the area, showcasing the stunning local scenery as runners navigate the roads of Kinsale, culminating in a triumphant finish on the school's 300m athletics track.
Run Republic spoke to the organisers of the event in the aftermath to talk about the race and how it all went as the annual run marked half a decade in the running calendar.
The backdrop for this year's race was far from ideal, as participants faced the relentless elements of high winds and heavy rain. The challenging conditions, however, did not dampen the spirits of the runners, who embraced the adversity with sheer determination.
The course records, set in 2023 by Tim O’Donoghue of East Cork AC (50:43) and Hannah Steeds of Leevale AC (60:43), stood as formidable benchmarks, seemingly impervious to challenge given the harsh weather. Despite this, a formidable lineup of athletes, including Tim O’Donoghue, Evan Fitzgerald, and Sergiu Ciobanu, gathered at the start line, ready to push their limits.
Tim O’Donoghue, a two-time Kinsale 10-Mile winner and National Masters CX champion, surged into an early lead, with Evan Fitzgerald and Sergiu Ciobanu hot on his heels. The standings held throughout the race, and despite the adverse weather, Tim O’Donoghue delivered a spectacular performance, claiming the top spot on the podium.
In the women's category, the phenomenal Aoife Cooke of Eagle AC, a past National Marathon champion and Olympian, graced the Kinsale 10-Mile for the first time. Catherine Murphy of Eagle AC secured second place, while Breda Gaffney of Mallow AC returned to the podium, clinching the third spot.
The race was not just a test of physical endurance but a showcase of the resilience and joy that sports can bring. As runners crossed the finish line, battered by the elements, their smiles mirrored the enthusiasm they had at the starting line. The event brought together athletes of all abilities, ages, and backgrounds, highlighting the universal appeal of the classic 10-mile distance.
The organisers expressed their gratitude to the incredible runners, dedicated volunteers enduring the elements, and local sponsors whose support ensures the success of the race each year. Special thanks were extended to emergency services, coast guard, local Gardai, and the Pop-Up races for their invaluable assistance throughout the event.
Looking ahead, the organisers eagerly anticipate the 2025 edition, hopeful for brighter skies and another memorable day of triumph and community spirit.
