June 17, 2024
On Sunday, June 16th, the annual Galty Crossing unfolded under flawless skies, marking a brilliant day for the 84 participants who braved the 32km race through the majestic mountain range. With an elevation gain of 1500m, this challenge promised both breathtaking vistas and demanding terrain, and it did not disappoint.
Participants were treated to perfect visibility that showcased the stunning natural beauty of the mountains in all their glory. The panoramic views from various vantage points left everyone in awe, highlighting the pristine landscapes that make the Galty Crossing a must-do event for mountain running enthusiasts.
The race culminated in a thrilling finish, with cheers resounding as the top contenders crossed the line. In the female category, Aoife Courtney claimed first place, followed by Sorcha Kearney in second, and Dee Collins securing third. Among the male competitors, Brian Mullins emerged victorious in first place, with Peter Roche taking second and Nick Hogan securing third.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication and planning of Race Director Patricia Blackburn and her team of enthusiastic volunteers. Their efforts ensured smooth operations and a memorable experience for all involved.
Adding to the festivities, Mags Hassett told Run Republic that Damien McDonnell's delectable salad sandwiches and apple tart stole the show at the finish line, earning praise from every exhausted but elated participant. The post-race refreshments were a fitting reward for the hard-earned achievements of the runners, providing a moment of communal celebration.
Looking forward, the excitement continues with the next event on the IMRA Munster calendar: the Coast2Coast individual and relay, commencing on Saturday, June 22nd. This upcoming challenge promises another opportunity for athletes to test their mettle and explore the stunning landscapes of our beautiful island.
