Rain or Shine: Triumphs and Unity at the Shandrum AC 4 Mile Road Race

Last Thursday, April 25th, marked a memorable evening as Shandrum AC hosted its highly anticipated 4 Mile Road Race. Runners from far and wide converged, showcasing the vibrant spirit of athletics that defines such events. The race witnessed an impressive turnout with 147 determined participants crossing the finish line.

The evening's racing commenced at 7:30pm under clear blue skies, promising ideal conditions for the race ahead. However, as the event unfolded, nature had its own plans, sending downpours to challenge the resilience of both seasoned and aspiring athletes. Yet, despite the weather's turn, the runners remained undeterred.

Evan Fitzgerald emerged as the victor in the men's category, clocking an impressive time of 20 minutes and 4 seconds. His remarkable performance showcased not only his individual prowess but also the level of competition that characterised the race. Following closely behind, Robert Troy of Liscarroll AC claimed the second spot, with Declan Guina from West Limerick AC securing third place.

In the women's category, Michelle Kenny from Leevale AC showcased her exceptional talent, finishing first with a time of 23 minutes and 14 seconds. The competition among the women was fierce, with Emma Flynn of North Cork AC clinching the second position and Pamela Kirby of Bilboa AC securing third place. Their achievements underscored the depth of talent and dedication present in the local running community.

Beyond the podium finishes, the race was a celebration of community support and solidarity. Local clubs turned out in full force, cheering on their fellow athletes and contributing to the vibrant atmosphere that permeated the event. The collective effort and sportsmanship on display were a testament to the enduring appeal of grassroots athletics and its ability to bring people together.

As the final runners crossed the finish line, the sense of accomplishment was palpable. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, the Shandrum AC 4 Mile Road Race proved to be a resounding success, leaving participants and spectators alike with cherished memories of a night filled with triumph, resilience, and the joy of running.
