Moyne AC's Athletes Shine Across Various Championships
April 8, 2024
IUAA Intervarsity T&F Outdoor Championships, Mary Peters Track Belfast.
Mary Peters Track, Belfast was the ideal setting for the IUAA Intervarsities track and field outdoor championships on Friday and Saturday last, the venue avoided the worst of Storm Kathleen, strong winds minus the rain is what the athletes had to contend with on what was the first outdoor outing of 2024 season for track and field athletes. Katie Bergin in the colour's of UCC on this occasion took to the track on Friday afternoon in the heats of the 200m, and was a convincing winner of her heat, which placed her in lane six in the final on Saturday. As on previous occasions Katie stormed out of the blocks and into a commanding lead in the first forty come fifty metres and held that position all the way to the finish. Job done and another National Title to add to the two U/23 60m and 200m already won in 2024. On Saturday also she was part of the UCC 4x100m relay team that won silver. Away on warm weather training in Tenerife now for a couple of weeks hopefully the benefit of that will be seen when she returns to The Mary Peters Track in early May for the Irish Milers Meet a World Athletics Bronze Tour event. Congrats and well done Katie.
123.ie All Ireland Juvenile Indoor Championships Day 2, TUS Athlone.
On Saturday Moyne A.C. were represented by two of our juveniles at the 123.ie All Ireland Juvenile Indoor Championships.
First up was Micheal Doyle in the boys U14 1km race walk. Micheal has been working so hard throughout the winter and spring months improving his endurance and technique. This it was clear to see once the gun went on Saturday afternoon in Athlone. Micheal walked the race of his life finishing in a time of 6:05.66, knocking nearly 7 seconds from his personal best time over the 1km distance. This great performance from Micheal led him to a fourth place finish just three seconds away from the Mildford A.C. athlete in third. Micheal can be very proud of his great effort. Under the watchful eye of coach Seamie Hartigan, Micheal will be ready to put some more excellent performances together in the outdoors in a couple of weeks' time.
Next up for Moyne AC was Gerard Delaney, fresh from his Munster U14 high jump win in Nenagh a couple of weeks ago. Gerard opened his day with a first time clearance of 1.25m, followed by another first time clearance of 1.30m. Unfortunately for Gerard he fouled on his three attempts at 1.35m but still finished in an excellent joint 10th position. Gerard has put so much work into his high jump the past few months with extra sessions with coach Paddy and with the outdoor season on the horizon Gerard will be looking to continue his great jumping into the summer months. Emma Delaney was entered in the girls U17 400m after her silver medal winning performance at the Munster Indoor Championships, but an injury unfortunately ruled her out of competing. But thankfully Emma is on the mend and training in preparation for the outdoors.
County Senior Road Championship, Templemore.
The County Senior Road Championships took place on Sunday morning in Templemore. The road season has been a great success for our ladies so far as they picked up second team at the County Novice in Moyne and first team at the County Intermediate in Galbally. This week Louise Fogarty, Sharon Cantwell, Orla Healy, and Angela Fogarty were the ladies to represent the green and gold. Louise picked off from where she left off last weekend running a very strong race to pick up another individual honour, finishing in third place in a very fast time of 18:55. Next home for Moyne was Sharon Cantwell in 5th place in a time of great time of 19:08. Orla Healy was close behind Sharon finishing in 6th place in another fast time of 19:35. Angela Fogarty was the fourth member of the Moyne team across the line in 11th position in a time of 20:48. Louise, Sharon, and Orla were the scoring members of the team today. It could not have been any closer to decide which team were county senior ladies champions for 2024. Unfortunately, the Moyne team were one point behind Dundrum, so the ladies were awarded the silver medals. A super way to round out the county road season for the Moyne A.C. ladies. Congrats to you all. Very exciting times ahead for the Moyne AC on the road.
