Milestones and Victories: A Recap of the Killiney Hill Relay Charity Race

Last night, the Killiney Hill Relay Charity race organised by the Irish Mountain Running Association (IMRA) brought together runners of all ages and abilities for a day of celebration, racing, and breathtaking views. Race Director Andrew Hanney shared his thoughts on the event, highlighting the significance of milestones, community inclusivity, and the spirit of togetherness that defines IMRA races.

One of the highlights of the event was honouring Diarmuid O’Colmain, a stalwart contributor to IMRA over the years. O’Colmain was presented with his 200th milestone t-shirt, a testament to his dedication and passion for mountain running. Hanney expressed great pleasure in recognising O’Colmain’s contributions and noted the significance of his daughter, Niamh, also receiving her 200th t-shirt, highlighting the generational commitment within the IMRA community.

Hanney extended his gratitude to all the volunteers whose efforts were instrumental in making the event a success. Special mention was given to Niamh, who as also assistant RD) for organising the kids' "follow the string" race, which encourages participation across all age groups.

With an impressive turnout of 51 runners forming 17 teams, participants enjoyed the unique experience of team selection, forging new connections. Hanney emphasised the contrast between traditional road races and IMRA events, noting that IMRA fosters a community where getting to know fellow runners is an integral part of the experience.

Despite looming rain, the event proceeded smoothly, showcasing the resilience and determination of the participants. Mixed teams comprising individuals of varying ages and backgrounds exemplified the inclusive nature of IMRA races, where unity and fun take precedence.

The race culminated in the triumph of Team 4, comprising Oscar Rowe, Pól Ó’Murchú, and Darren O’Toole, who secured victory with a combined time of 36:25. As the runners traversed Killiney Hill, the serene views served as a picturesque backdrop to the evening's festivities, reminding everyone of the beauty that defines IMRA events.

In essence, the Killiney Hill Relay Charity race not only celebrated athletic achievements but also epitomised the spirit of community, inclusivity, and shared passion for mountain running that defines IMRA's ethos.
