Impressive Friday for Team Ireland at World Masters Athletics Championships

Team Ireland produced more impressive performances at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Friday, August 23rd. Following our report on Friday afternoon, the athletes continued to showcase their abilities across various age categories, bringing home a collection of medals in the 400m finals and advancing in the 1500m semi-finals.
The 400m events saw several Irish athletes take to the track, with standout performances across multiple age groups:
- John MacDermott (M80): Proving yet again that age is just a number, MacDermott stormed to victory in the M80 category, clocking an exceptional time of 75.02 seconds to secure the gold medal. MacDermott had the Championships of a lifetime in Gothenburg!
- Carlton Haddock (M50): Competing in a competitive M50 category, Haddock delivered a top performance, finishing in 52.85 seconds to earn the silver medal. His team-mate, Jim Phelan, also ran in the M50 category, finishing 6th with a time of 55.23 seconds.
- Edel Maguire (W65): Maguire added another silver to Ireland's tally in the W65 category, crossing the finish line in 71.40 seconds.
- Annette Quaid: In a brilliant display, Quaid clinched the gold medal in her category, clocking an impressive 58.73 seconds.
In the 1500m semi-finals, Ireland’s Brian Lynch (M70) delivered a strong performance, securing first place in his heat with a time of 5:34.14, ensuring his place in the finals.
Friday's results highlight the depth of talent within Team Ireland, with several athletes standing atop the podium and others advancing with confidence.
