Donaghadee 5k: Racing for a Cause
July 24, 2024
This evening, Wednesday, 24th July, the beautiful coastal town of Donaghadee will host this year's Donaghadee 5k, sponsored by Rea Estates. The race commences at 19:30 from The Harbour and concludes at The Commons, offering participants a scenic route with stunning views of the shoreline.
Organised by the dedicated Dee Runners, the race has seen tremendous enthusiasm from the community. The event sold out in less than 24 hours, underscoring its popularity. This year marks the fifth edition of the race, organised by Dee Runners, a group known for their togetherness and tight-knit approach to running. The group trains together every Wednesday and participates in various runs over the weekends, fostering a supportive environment for runners of all abilities.
The course, which is measured and certified by Athletics Northern Ireland (ANI), is limited to 350 participants to ensure safety given the tight nature of the route. The demand for spots in the race is evident, with a waiting list of 50 hopefuls this year, reflecting the event's growing reputation.
Beyond the race, the Donaghadee 5k is committed to giving back to the community. This year, proceeds will support The Gaitway Organisation, a cause close to the hearts of Dee Runners' members. The Gaitway Organisation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of local children with physical disabilities due to neurological impairments. Their mission is to provide access to a range of physical activities, enabling these children to reach their full potential. They seek to create opportunities for children and young adults with neurological motor disabilities, such as Cerebral Palsy, to receive additional therapy within Ireland.
The Donaghadee 5k enjoys invaluable support from Rea Estates, an estate agency with offices in Bangor and Belfast. Their connection to the race is personal, as one of the club members is part of their team. Rea Estates has been a steadfast supporter of the event, providing crucial backing each year. Their dedication and support are deeply appreciated by organisers, and the race would not be possible without their continued commitment.
As the race takes place this evening, the Donaghadee 5k will not only celebrate athletic achievement but also the collective effort to support The Gaitway Organisation.
