The Race with Runners and Spectators in Mind
January 18, 2024
Looking to build on the momentum of a successful opening three weeks, the Galway Cross Country Series hits the Merlin Trail this Saturday morning, January 20th!
Run Republic caught up with Sean McDermott as he prepares for the fourth week of racing in Galway!
'Really looking forward to Saturday morning and getting the place set up.
'We have an exciting 2 x 300m loop for the FUN COUNTRY RACE, this week and we have a 1km loop for both the Short course race of 2km and 4km.
When chatting to Sean, we asked about the course and how it differs to what has been run thus far; 'It's a course designed both with runners, parents and spectators in mind.
'With the trails guaranteed all weather terrain, running it will provide a safe outlet for anyone looking to beat the freeze up. The course consists of uphill running on the side trails and some fast running on the main trails.
'Hot chocolate, tea, coffee, and biscuits afterwards but firstly the Fresh fruit from our Series sponsor Terryland Fruit and Veg Market.'
The goal remains clear for Sean, to inspire the next generation of athletes through this growing series.
'Hopefully we can inspire the next generation of athletes and get them into Athletics ireland clubs so they can sample multiple events and disciplines.'
On the day of the race, there will be parking, changing facilities, and toilets at Doughiska Park. From there, runners and spectators can make their way to the community garden where the woods meet the park and follow signs to the start point.
Entry is still open, and this week you can make your way to the race and sign up for a one day entry! If you wish to sign up online, you can follow the link here!
If you want to run a fast race this weekend, or even want to watch a competitive race with a great atmosphere, get down to the Merlin Trail and join the Galway Cross Country Series!
