At just 16 years old, Thomas Williams is already fast making a name for himself in the world of hammer throwing. Representing Shercock AC, Thomas has already shown incredible talent under the guidance of his father and coach, Neil Williams. His achievements over the past two years highlight his dedication and potential in this demanding sport.
In 2023, Thomas's journey was marked by a series of outstanding victories. His year began with a first-place finish at the Schools International in Scotland, where he more than held his own against strong competition. This success was followed by impressive wins in his home country. At the All Ireland Juveniles, he claimed the top spot, further solidifying his status as a top contender. He continued his success at the All Ireland Schools, securing another first-place finish, and then at the Ulster Schools, where he once again stood top of the podium. The Tailteann Games saw him achieve another first place finish, further cementing his dominance in the field. Thomas also competed internationally, earning a second place at the English Championships and a first place at the Welsh Championships, highlighting his competitiveness outside of Ireland.
Considering these achievements, the number of top finishes Thomas secured in 2023 is remarkable. 2024 has been no different.
This year has seen Thomas elevate his performance to even greater heights. He has continued his winning streak and shattered long-standing records. At the Ulster Schools, he achieved first place and broke the event's record. His performance at the All Ireland Schools was particularly impressive, as he won first place and set a new record, surpassing the previous one established in 1981. The Tailteann Games saw him achieve another remarkable feat, winning first place and breaking the record set in 1977 by an impressive 10 metres. Currently, Thomas is ranked number one in the world for under-18 athletes. His international prowess was further highlighted when he travelled to Spain and won the competition with a throw of 76.12 metres.
Despite his numerous accolades, he remains firmly focused on the future. In the short term, Thomas aims to compete and win at the European Under 18 Championships. He also plans to participate in the English Championships, where he hopes to break the Championship Best Performance. Beyond that, Thomas's long-term goals include securing a scholarship in America, which would allow him to further both his academic and athletic career. He is determined to continue improving and eventually become a dominant force in the world of hammer throw.
His achievements at such a young age indicate his potential to become a world-class athlete. With the support of his family and his own commitment to continue flourishing as an athlete, the future looks incredibly bright for this young hammer thrower, and Run Republic is excited to see what comes next for Thomas Williams!
