Strong Day 1 for Team Ireland in Gothenburg

The World Masters Athletics Championships have kicked off with a promising start for Team Ireland. As Day 1 drew to a close, several Irish athletes had already put their mark on the Championships, setting a positive tone for the rest of the competition.
In the 100 metres, five athletes from Team Ireland have advanced comfortably to the semi-finals. The five brilliant performances were split between male and female categories, with Sinead O'Regan (W45), Linda Nally (W50), and Leanne Wellings (W50) all poised to make significant strides in their respective age category semis. On the men’s side, Shane Sheridan (M65) and Shane Toolan (M65) also secured their spots in the semi-finals, with both showing impressive speed to secure their places.
Laura Frey (W35) made an impressive debut in her first World Masters Championships. She currently holds 3rd place in the Heptathlon after the first day of competition, showing strong potential as the event progresses.
Mick Priest (M70) delivered a huge performance in the 2000m Steeplechase. He not only finished in 5th place but also set a new Irish M70 record, an incredible achievement and to do it on the world stage makes it all the sweeter.
With such a strong start, Team Ireland are poised for more success throughout the Championships.
