National Children’s Games, Tullamore

Sunday was a busy day of athletics and the club was delighted to be represented in Tullamore at the National Children’s Games. On a scorcher of a day, Lily Murphy and Meadhbh Hall were first up in the girls u11 long jump. The girls jumped well, putting up best jumps of 3.63m (Meadhbh) and 3.60m (Lily). Their combined score of 7.23m, was just a few cm outside the medals, and the girls finished 4th overall.

With a quick turn around, the girls headed straight to the 60m. Meadhbh ran in heat 1, and due to a technical issue, their initial run wasn’t recorded. When the heat was re-run she crossed the line 4th with a time of 9.29s, the 5th fastest time in the competition. Lily lined out in heat 2, where she crossed the line in third in 9.65s.

Our U9 girls were also in action in the long jump, in their first National championships. Aisling Costigan jumped a huge PB of 3.09m and Caoimhe Quinlan followed up her great performance in the Munster championships with a great jump of 3.13m. When the results were added up, the girls combined result of 6.22m, was enough to claim the gold medal! Congratulations to our newest National Champions on what we hope will be the first of many!

Finally, the girls u11 4x100m relay team were in action. The well established team of Meadhbh Hall, Annie Ely, Órlaith Costigan and Lily Murphy took to the track in heat 2 of the girls u11 relay. Ever reliable, the girls all left everything on the track, and their super sprinting and slick changeovers meant they recorded a PB time of 1.00.25. After an anxious wait, the girls collected silver medals along with the two brilliant subs -Daisy Lyons and Ella-Mai Drennan - who traveled and warmed up alongside the girls. Well done to all involved on another super day in Tullamore!
