Progress Update on the MTU Track
May 29, 2024
As of May 23rd last week, Cork Athletics has provided an encouraging update on the much-anticipated resurfacing of the MTU Track. The preparatory phase for the track resurfacing has successfully commenced, and over the past week, significant strides have been made with approximately 30% of the final surface now in place. This marks a pivotal moment in the project, promising a state-of-the-art facility for athletes in the near future.
If all continues to proceed smoothly, the Official Opening of the MTU Track is slated for the 70th Cork City Sports on the evening of Tuesday, July 9th. Prior to this grand reopening, Cork Athletics say there are hopes to conduct one or two low-key events to test the new track surface and ensure its readiness for competitive use.
The prolonged closure of the MTU Track, coupled with the shutdown of the UCC Mardyke Track, has highlighted a critical issue within the athletics community: the dire need for accessible and reliable track facilities. This situation has underscored the importance of maintaining high-quality training and competition venues, serving as a wake-up call that has mobilised clubs across Cork.
In response to these closures, there has been a concerted effort to enhance and develop other tracks in the region. Noteworthy progress includes the ongoing work at Bandon AC and the development plans for new tracks in Mallow and East Cork. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to expanding and improving athletic infrastructure, ensuring that athletes have the resources they need to train and compete effectively.
The resumption of work on the MTU Track signifies a significant step forward for athletics in Cork. With the completion of this project, athletes will once again have access to a top-tier facility, fostering growth and excellence in the sport.
