National B Track & Field Championships, Tullamore
On Saturday the 20th of July the National ‘B’ Championships took place in Tullamore. The club was well represented across events and it was wonderful to see a number of athletes coming away with PB’s and medals, as well as the great experience of competing in these championships.
In the boys u12 high jump, two athletes represented the club - Darragh Maher and Tom Renehan. The boys got off to a flying start, clearing the opening heights. Tom hit a small stumble, taking two attempts to clear 1.10m and 1.15m before jumping clear again at 1.20m and 1.25m, his first time clearance at 1.25m turned out to be crucial, as it was this that secured him a bronze medal in the event. Meanwhile, Darragh jumped clear on his first attempt all the way up to 1.25m, at 1.30m he cleared again on his second attempt. Darragh also finished on the podium in second place, narrowly losing out on a countback. The club is incredibly proud to have two athletes on the podium in one event, and huge credit to the boys for the work they have put in throughout the year to achieve these results.
Saoirse Joyce lined out in the girls u13 80m, running in heat 3, of 6 she ran in lane 7, speeding down the track in 12.39s. Saoirse finished 6th in her heat. Saoirse also competed in the long jump on the day. Her best jump came in the first round, where she jumped a superb 3.64m, finishing in 11th place in a field of 34 athletes.
