Copenhagen & Roverto Roundup: McCann & Scott Impress
September 3, 2024
Several Irish athletes were in action this evening in Denmark and Italy, competing across various distances as the track season nears its conclusion.
At the Copenhagen Athletics Games, St. Laurence O'Toole AC’s Molly Scott was the first of the Irish to take to the track. She delivered an impressive performance, winning her 100m heat with a season’s best time of 11.48, narrowly edging out Italy’s Irene Siragusa by just one hundredth of a second.
In a swift turnaround of just over an hour, Scott returned to the track for the final, where she went even faster, clocking a personal best of 11.41 to secure third place. This achievement moves her up to seventh on the Irish all-time list for the 100m.
Next on the track was UCD’s Luke McCann, competing just days after his victory in the 1,000m race in Poland on Saturday. McCann ran a controlled race, staying with the main group before making a significant push in the final 200m. He moved up from sixth to finish in second place with a personal best of 3:52.70.
Leevale’s Michelle Finn also competed, taking part in the 5000m race, where she recorded a time of 16:09.80.
Meanwhile, over in Rovereto, two Irish athletes participated in the Palio Città della Quercia. Sarah Lavin, competing in her second race in three days after finishing third with a time of 12.90 in Switzerland on Sunday, fought hard to secure another third-place finish with a time of 13.11.
The final Irish athlete in action was Finn Valley’s Mark English, competing in the 800m race—his first since the Paris Olympics. The Donegal native finished strongly, taking second place with a time of 1:45.17.
