The Cork community is in mourning following the tragic death of Ellen Cassidy, a 24-year-old local woman who collapsed while completing the Cork City Half-Marathon on Sunday.
Ellen, a native of Cork, became unwell just after crossing the finish line on Patrick Street around 1 pm. Despite the immediate and professional response of on-site medical personnel, she passed away at Cork University Hospital.
Cork City Council confirmed her passing in a statement expressing their “deep sadness,” and later paid tribute:
“Cork City Council is deeply saddened at the passing of Ellen Cassidy, a participant in Sunday’s Cork City Marathon."
Ellen was a proud graduate of University College Cork and a former student of St Angela’s College on Patrick’s Hill. A gifted athlete, Ellen had deep roots in Cork’s sporting community, particularly in swimming.
She began her sporting journey with Dolphin Swimming Club in Mayfield at the age of nine and went on to represent her club, province, and country at national and international competitions. Known for her drive, discipline, and leadership, Ellen held multiple club records, was previously awarded Swimmer of the Year, and served as team captain, earning the respect and admiration of her teammates and coaches alike.
Tributes continued to pour in from friends and from those who knew her from Urban Fitness Cork, saying she is:
"One of the most inspiring, kindest, and warm-hearted people they ever met. You lit up the gym every day with your big smile and warm personality."
Ellen will be laid to rest on Thursday, June 5th in Blackpool, Cork, with those attending requested to wear colourful clothing to celebrate her life.
